Site promotion is a huge topic and I will be touching on this subject over and over and over…. After all, what good is your beautiful site if nobody comes to see it.

Word of mouth has always been one of the staple methods of promotion and with the Internet being what it is… it’s a goldmine for word of mouth promotion. So how do you do it?

The most useful method on the web these days are bookmarking and sharing websites where people open accounts and start talking about sites they have found. They keyword their “discoveries” and through various methods members share what they have found with others. This is usually combined with everyone chiming in with comments on the site (much like reviews). In general when a person notes that a member is always finding stuff they like (we’ll call him “member X”), they will add that member to their ‘friends’ list which will automatically inform them when “member x” adds something new to his list.

You can see how this system can exponentially roll.

So how does this help me? All these bookmarking sites provide “add this site” icons which you can place onto your web pages. People who are members of that particular bookmarking site will note the icon and hopefully, add you to their list with a simple button click, assuming they like what they’ve found.

I have found that the best way to deal with the dozens of these such sites is too use a nifty free tool from addthis.com This clever tool allow you to add dozens of such sites to your site with a single button. It comes in several nice looking buttons or you can customize it to a text link if you wish. In addition they provide nice data tables showing you how many people have added the site and to which of the bookmarking sites they listed you.

It’s free so what the hell?
